You’ll learn why a joint may hurt and what can ease the soreness. Wear becomes more common over time. Nearby muscles and tendons can also be strained, and an old injury may hurt again.

Notice the time the ache begins and which motion brings it on. Soreness after a certain task often comes from extra load or strain. If the cause isn’t clear, an exam can sort out which part needs care.

## Use-related soreness often eases with a lighter load

After a longer walk, yard work or repeated reaching, ease that task for several days. Don’t stop all movement, because gentle bending and short walks can limit stiffness. Add time or distance slowly as the soreness fades.

Warmth before movement may help a stiff joint, while cold afterward can calm swelling. Supportive shoes or a walking aid may take pressure off a knee or hip. Stop if the joint feels less steady after the activity.

## Some changes mean the joint needs prompt care

Heat, redness and marked swelling are not usual soreness after activity. Fever, chills or feeling ill make them more concerning, so get medical care soon. A hard fall or a joint that has changed shape also needs quick care.

Get prompt help for sudden weakness or a new inability to put weight on the joint. Several swollen joints with long morning stiffness also need a doctor’s exam. These problems can have causes that home care cannot safely sort out.

## Soreness that keeps returning deserves an exam

A routine visit makes sense when the ache lasts or keeps limiting your day. Tell the doctor which motion hurts, what eases it and whether you have swelling or weakness. Bring old scans so the doctor can decide whether they still match the sore area.

A scan may show wear in a joint that has never hurt. That’s why the hands-on exam still matters. Ask whether the exam found strain, swelling, weakness or another cause, then ask what relief fits that cause.

## What you do around Gilbert may explain the soreness

A long level walk can still place repeated load on a knee or hip. Miles may add up along the routes at the Riparian Preserve. Pickleball at Gilbert Regional Park adds quick starts, turns and reaches that strain joints in another way.

Work may add long sitting, standing or lifting to that load. Notice whether stiffness follows time in a chair or soreness follows time on your feet. Tell the doctor about changes in shoes, pace or rest because those facts can help explain the ache.

1. A meta-analysis of 20 dietary supplements across 69 randomised trials in hand, hip or knee osteoarthritis found that seven (collagen hydrolysate, passion fruit peel extract, Curcuma longa extract, Boswellia serrata extract, curcumin, pycnogenol and L-carnitine) showed large short-term effects on pain, and six more (undenatured type II collagen, avocado soybean unsaponifiables, methylsulfonylmethane, diacerein, glucosamine, chondroitin) showed statistically significant but clinically unclear effects. At MEDIUM term only green-lipped mussel extract and undenatured type II collagen retained clinically important effects, and NO supplement had a clinically important effect on pain at long term.

2. Within the VITAL trial - 25,871 US adults randomised in a 2-by-2 factorial design to vitamin D and/or marine omega-3 fatty acids - a subgroup of 1,398 participants with pre-existing chronic knee pain (mean age 67.7, 66% women, mean WOMAC pain 37 of 100) was followed for a mean of 5.3 years. WOMAC pain did not differ between active vitamin D and its placebo, or between active omega-3 and its placebo, at any time point, and the time-by-treatment interactions were not significant. Function and stiffness gave the same answer.

3. OARSI's 2019 guideline is the only major osteoarthritis guideline that grades treatments separately for people with disease in MULTIPLE joints. Its Core Treatments for polyarticular OA are arthritis education and structured land-based exercise. Critically, intra-articular corticosteroid and intra-articular hyaluronic acid were Level 1B/2 options for knee OA only and were NOT recommended for hip or polyarticular OA; oral NSAIDs were not recommended at all for people with cardiovascular comorbidity or frailty; and paracetamol/acetaminophen was conditionally not recommended.

4. A systematic review of 33 studies reporting CT or MRI findings in 3,110 people with NO symptoms found that degenerative changes are close to universal with age. Disc degeneration was present in 37% of 20-year-olds and 96% of 80-year-olds; disc bulge in 30% at 20 and 84% at 80; disc protrusion in 29% at 20 and 43% at 80. The authors concluded that many imaging-based degenerative features are likely part of normal ageing and unassociated with pain.
